Buffalo Technology launches next generation consumer NAS devices

Buffalo Technology, a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of storage and wireless networking solutions, today announces the launch of its new consumer NAS storage devices the LinkStation 400 family. The devices offer huge storage capability and feature an enhanced processor core, which provides data transfer speeds of more than 100 MB/s.

The NAS series comprises the LinkStation 410 devices and the next generation Enclosure LinkStation 421DE devices. The devices enable users to consolidate all their media files from their various home entertainment devices including games consoles, PCs and laptops, smartphones and tablets in one central location. Users can also share their entire iTunes collection with all the media devices across their network.

Ease of use

The new LinkStation family features an advanced, intuitive and user-friendly interface, which simply guides users through setup and administration of the devices. From the default landing page users can find links to commonly used features, which also include wizards, explanations and graphics making mastering NAS administration no longer the daunting challenge its commonly perceived as.

Remote access

The latest LinkStation series also enables users to access their media files and personal data on-the-go, whenever and wherever they like. Users can remotely access all data stored on the LinkStation via smart devices and web browsers using the Buffalo WebAccess app. All LinkStation 400 devices also come armed with a free personal cloud account for every user.

Additionally, the LinkStation 400 series enables remote control of media content from Android and iOS devices, and remote control of BitTorrent from Android devices.

Paul Hudson, Sales Director Northern Europe at Buffalo Technology, said: The new LinkStation devices combine high usability levels with advanced storage capability and lightning fast data transfers. The remote access feature enables users to take up to 8TB of data and media files on-the-go, via their smartphone, laptop or tablet with Buffalos WebAccess app.

Enclosure option

The LinkStation 400 family also sees the launch of Buffalos first Enclosure products, with the LS421DE devices. The products feature the new generation Marvell ARMADA 370, 1.2GHz ARMv7 CPU core and DDR3 512MB RAM. When fully populated they can be configured in RAID 0 for performance or RAID 1 for redundant storage as part of a back-up solution.

Klaas de Vos, Senior Director of European Sales & Marketing at Buffalo Technology, said: This is the first time Buffalo has provided the channel with a state-of-the-art NAS offering, both with and without the hard drive assembly. Until now we only made NAS available fully populated, however at the request of our customers, we have created our first set of Enclosure products to enhance flexibility, scalability and performance for users.

With the new Enclosure devices, users have the option of increasing their network capacity as and when they choose. They can start by installing only one drive, with the choice of adding another when necessary.

Categorical is an engaging social word game that challenges users to score big points by using a set of given letters to come up with answers to a list of categories.

We wrote Categorical because we wanted to create a fun social experience in the style of Scattergories, but we wanted it to be more modern and have better replay value, said Ezra Smith, CEO of Fridgecat Software. The average ‘give an answer starting with this letter’ game gets boring very quickly — you can only play so many games where the category is ‘a vegetable’ before you’ve exhausted all the good answers for a specific letter.

Users play timed rounds against friends, or random users, to see who can come up with the best answers. They can also review their opponents round, and challenge the answers they feel may be incorrect. At that point, the player may choose to justify their answer, or agree that its incorrect. After three rounds, the player with the most points wins.

Personally, I love hearing people talk about Categorical games they’ve played recently. People tell me about the hilarious answer a friend played against them, and I’m always thrilled to see the game transcend their mobile devices and become a general topic of conversation, said Smith.

With Facebook integration, users can invite their friends to play, or start a game with a random player. Players can communicate with messages back and forth with opponents; a little friendly banter that makes the game more interesting. Finishing a game earns the player tokens to purchase new categories and activate power-ups, making Categorical suitable for hours of entertainment.

“At its core, Categorical is meant to be a fun social experience. It’s cross-platform, so Android and iOS users can play games against each other. It’s engaging for all skill levels, too: a novice player might be happy to think of an answer with all of the required letters, while more experienced players will use the most valuable letters to rack up big points, said Smith.

BT Wi-fi Hits 5 Million Hotspots

BT Wi-fi has announced that its reached more than 5 million Wi-fi hotspots in the UK and Ireland, with the company adding more than 20,000 new hotspots each week over the past year.

BT saw more than 400 million connections across its wi-fi network in 2012/14* and latest figures show users online wi-fi time is increasing, with minutes more than tripling in the same period.

An incredible 13 petabytes of data (13 billion megabytes) were consumed across BTs Wi-fi network during 2012/13*. The volume is the equivalent of downloading 3.9 billion MP3s (iTunes currently has 26m songs in its library), or non-stop streaming of The Hobbit in HD for 1,042 years.

If you were to take smartphone photos placed side by side, this amount of data would be over 624,000 miles long or long enough to wrap around the equator twice.**

Research conducted by BT and ICM*** has found that usage trends for wi-fi vary according to age. Most 18-24s favour wi-fi for social media, whilst the 35-44 age group chooses to shop online. Most 45-54s use it for GPS and mapping services, whilst the over 65s use wi-fi for finding discount vouchers or codes.

Andy Baker, BT Wi-fi CEO, said: The time wi-fi users spend online and the amount of data theyre using is up across our network. People are now so confident and comfortable with their gadgets, weve had to meet the demand with more hotspots in a wider choice of places on the high street and in thousands of neighbourhoods across the country.

There are now more than 764,000 places where people can connect via BT Wi-fi in the South East, 464,000 in Scotland, 519,000 in the East, around 501,000 in the South West, and more than 543,000 in London. BT has also made it even easier for people to find a wi-fi hotspot when out and about in the capital by teaming up with Recce, the immersive 3D city map to include BT Wi-fi hotspots in the latest Recce London app. BTs own Wi-fi apps are also proving popular with almost 2 million downloads by BT Broadband customers and are available in the relevant app stores for Windows, iOS, Android and Blackberry users.

All BT Wi-fi hotspots are free and unlimited for BT Broadband customers although anyone can logon. Its available at brands like Starbucks, GAME, John Lewis, Network Rail and Hilton plus millions of homes and thousands of independent businesses.
